Creating a Personal Care Plan: A Reflection for Sustainable Well-Being

Let’s be honest—work can take a lot out of us. Some challenges fuel us, pushing us to grow and thrive, while others drain our energy, leaving us exhausted and on the edge of burnout. According to the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model, the key to long-term success isn’t eliminating stress altogether but balancing demands with the right resources—both in your work and personal life.

If you’re feeling stretched too thin or struggling to find that balance, a personal care plan can help. This isn’t about self-care as a luxury—it’s about building a system that supports your energy, motivation, and resilience so that you can sustain your work without burning out.

Start With Reflection: What’s Lifting You Up vs. Wearing You Down?

Before creating a personal care plan, take a step back and assess where you are right now. Grab a journal or open a blank document and reflect on these questions:

1. Understanding Your Job Demands

  • What parts of my work give me energy, excitement, or a sense of purpose?

  • What parts feel exhausting, frustrating, or out of my control?

  • Am I currently experiencing more challenge demands (which push me to grow) or hindrance demands (which block my progress and drain me)?

  • How does my work impact my personal life—positively or negatively?

2. Identifying Your Resources

  • What support systems do I have at work (mentors, colleagues, leadership, autonomy, training)?

  • What support systems do I have outside of work (friends, family, faith, community)?

  • What practices already help me recharge—physically, emotionally, spiritually?

  • Where am I lacking resources, and what’s one step I could take to strengthen them?

3. Creating Boundaries & Recovery Strategies

  • Where do I need to set clearer boundaries between work and personal life?

  • How often do I truly rest—without feeling guilty or checking emails?

  • What daily or weekly habits would help me recover and stay engaged long-term?

  • What’s one thing I can start doing today to make work more sustainable?

4. Crafting Your Personal Care Plan

Now, take your reflections and turn them into an action plan. Your personal care plan should include:

  • How you will manage job demands (e.g., reducing unnecessary hindrances, asking for support, setting limits on workload)

  • What resources you will strengthen (e.g., seeking mentorship, delegating tasks, prioritizing time with loved ones)

  • Your non-negotiable recovery practices (e.g., daily quiet time, exercise, creative hobbies, weekly rest days)

💡 Remember: Small changes lead to lasting impact. Don’t overwhelm yourself—start with one manageable step and build from there.
